Fun Camping Activities For Kids

Keep kids of all ages entertained on camping trips with this great list of fun activities.

There's no doubt that camping is an activity enjoyed by people of all ages. Whether you're with a group of friends or the whole family, there's something quite special about sitting around the campfire together and sleeping under the stars.

When kids are involved, it's even more special to be able to take away the devices and get them outdoors to enjoy nature and have some quality time with the family. We admit, though, that sometimes it's not so easy to get the kids away from their phones or tablets, especially the older kids.

If you're trying to think of some fun activities to keep them distracted (ahem, entertained), then you might like to try one of the great games or activities we've included below.

Classic Outdoor Challenges

Do you remember those basic (but pretty fun) outdoor activities you used to do at school fetes and picnics like the three-legged race, egg and spoon relay or potato sack race? You might not have a potato sack handy but if everyone's brought their sleeping bag then you could have some fun watching the shenanigans unfold. And the kids are bound to have fun participating of course ;) Get creative and set up some interesting obstacles, everyone is bound to have a good laugh AND get tired out. You're welcome!

Water Fight

Bring a couple of water guns and super soakers and set up a game of cops and robbers or cowboys and Indians. This is great during the warmer months and you're guaranteed to hear some squeals of delight as it likely turns into a free-for-all water fight! Please note, you will probably get wet too.

Scavenger Hunt

These are a lot of fun for kids and the more difficult it is, the longer they will be occupied. Check out these printable lists on Pinterest, or you can make up your own. Some of the things you can include are:

  • Y-shaped stick
  • Crunchy leaves
  • A feather
  • Moss
  • Smooth rock
  • A pinecone
  • Something colourful/rough/bumpy/pretty

The ideas are limitless!

Enjoy The Simple Things

Sometimes just taking it easy and getting them to enjoy what's around them is the way to go. Why not use this time to teach your kids how to skip a rock on the water, go fishing, make shapes out of the clouds or catch up on some reading under a tree or in a hammock? You can go for a walk, look out for any animals or birds, or sit around the campfire and roast some marshmallows.

Thunderbird Park - Awesome activities for everyone

If you're camping at Thunderbird Park, then there is no shortage of fun things to do with the family. Our Treetop Challenge is very popular with kids (and even adults) of all ages, particularly thrill seekers.

  • Soar through the rainforest canopy on the Canyon Flyer guided ziplining tour and reach speeds of up to 70km per hour. With seven huge ziplines, you won't get a better view of Cedar Creek Canyon. This is the ultimate activity for adventurers in the family - just note that there is a minimum weight limit of 40kg.
  • With more than 110 adrenalin-pumping tree top challenges, our Adventure Park will be a hit with the whole family. Enjoy huge flying foxes, Tarzan swings, high ropes and more. Test yourself on our obstacle courses catering to all levels from easy to extreme. Just remember to bring your dare-devil attitude! The minimum age is 7 years old, however, for younger children, we have the perfect solution.
  • Our Junior Treetop Challenge has been built for children ages 3 to 7 with over 50 safe rope challenges. The challenge starts with 2 beginner courses designed for the kids to have fun and build their confidence, before moving on to the next 2 courses that will take the kids out of their comfort zone.
